Oral cancer screenings are a very important part of the dental visit for the patient. Unfortunately, oral cancer has not improved its 5 year prognosis in more than 20 years. There is great advantage to finding it very early. This is why Dr. Reider either asks you to stick your tongue out at him or pushes on your tongue at each hygiene exam. Oral cancer most often is found under or on the side of the tongue! Dr. Reider takes very seriously the time spent looking at your throat, cheeks, lips, tongue, palate, and floor of the mouth.
Certain lifestyle choices can have a great impact on the health of tissues in the mouth. If you are a smoker or heavy drinker, make sure to get regular screenings when you visit the dentist.
